In this book you learn that poor choices result in poor consequences, it makes you think before you act upon your actions.

John has problems at home with his dad. Such as, he used to drink a lot of alcohol and smokes. This is also one of the reasons Lorraine thinks John does these things. He is trying to rebel against what his father wants him to be.
